Bangor Metro: Business: Executive Portrait: Eco-Entrepreneur Alison Lewey has invented something that makes people invisible-to mosquitoes, blackflies and 20 other assorted micro-vermin. Lewey’s patented insect repellant, Lewey’s Eco-Blends, has passed muster in clinical studies by Florida A&M; it’s been named a top product of the year by Mother Earth News; and it’s drawn close to 1,000 unsolicited testimonials, from zookeepers to wilderness guides, home gardeners to U.S. soldiers.

The biggest buzz, however, is not how effective her product is. The real miracle is that this powerful product is made up of 100% natural oils, so harmless, Lewey says, “you could put it on your salad.”

With Lewey’s product, necessity was the mother of invention. When her infant son was being attacked by the blackflies of Corinna, Maine, Lewey concocted a blend of essential oils that kept baby Luke bite-free for hours at a time. A Native American (Passamaquoddy and Maliseet), Lewey had been turning to herbal wisdom ever since she could remember.

Here is a link from Beyond Pesticides explaining this copycat’s clothing  The outdoor stores selling the clothing, including REI, EMS, and Hudson Trail Outfitters, appear to know very little about the pesticide contained in the clothing. Although permethrin is being described as ”a man-made version of a repellent that occurs naturally in chrysanthemums,” in reality, permethrin, like other synthetic pyrethroids, is engineered to be much more toxic and persistent than natural pyrethrins.
The new line of kid’s clothing is particularly offensive as children are known to be more susceptible to the adverse effects of low dose pesticide exposure. Animal studies have shown permethrin, in particular, to be more toxic to young children than adults and to potentially inhibit neonatal brain development.
